Burnout, Baby Naps and a Business That Wasn’t Working Anymore

Burnout as a business owner doesn’t always look like a dramatic breakdown. Sometimes, it’s quiet. Slow. A gradual build-up of stress, exhaustion, and resentment — until one day, you realise you don’t even recognise the business you built.

That was me, a few months after returning from maternity leave — working strange hours, wired from morning to night, and running on caffeine. I had created a business I loved… until I didn’t.

The Schedule That Broke Me

I was working at the crack of dawn, during naptimes, and again at night — sometimes until 11pm. Then I’d be up during the night with our baby before logging on again at 5am. Even on the days I had childcare, I was still working early mornings and late nights. It was madness.

There were no real breaks, no proper weekends, and definitely no time for myself.

The Moment I Knew Something Had to Change

I’d get Caoimhín down for a nap and go straight to my laptop… only to stare at the screen. I wasn’t just tired — I was drained. Everything felt heavy. Even answering emails or deciding what task to tackle first felt like too much.

I had turned something I absolutely loved doing into something I dreaded.

And the worst part? I was always working, but not actually getting anything done.

This Isn’t What I Signed Up For

I didn’t start this business to burn out. I started it for freedom, for flexibility, for a life that could hold both my work and my family.

But somehow, I had rebuilt the same stressful patterns I thought I’d left behind when I quit my job.

Something had to give.

Rebuilding a Business That Supports Me

I realised it wasn’t just my schedule that needed to change — it was the way I was running my business. My systems weren’t supporting me. My website wasn’t pulling its weight. Everything was manual, time-consuming, and dependent on me being online 24/7.

So I started again. Gently. Thoughtfully.

I redesigned my website and streamlined my systems to do more of the heavy lifting. Booking systems, automation, clear messaging, fewer steps and more support.

What I Know Now

If you’re sitting in front of your laptop staring at the screen, feeling like there’s no time or energy left to do what you actually want to do — I see you.

Burnout as a business owner is real. But it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It might just mean it’s time to rebuild things in a way that supports you.

If your website isn’t supporting you, it’s okay to make a change.
You deserve a business that works around your real life — not the other way around.
